Abstract
Root Resorption Today and Tomorrow
by Kuijpers-Jagtman Anne Marie
High-quality orthodontic finishing is often judged by facial esthetics, functional harmony, and occlusal detail. Yet true treatment excellence also depends on what we prevent: adverse effects that may compromise an otherwise successful outcome. Orthodontic tooth movement is built on a controlled biological response within the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. But the same biological system that enables tooth displacement may also produce unwanted consequences, including root resorption. Treatment-induced apical root resorption remains particularly relevant because of its frequency, clinical impact, and potential irreversibility. This lecture will explore which clinical strategies are currently available to reduce or modify risk. Can root resorption be biologically prevented or controlled? Are clear aligners better at that? Can AI help us move from damage control to prevention? As orthodontics moves toward more personalized and data-driven care, the key question remains: in root resorption, what will be the next big thing?
