Abstract

The Orthodontic-Restorative. Opportunity. Diagnosis, Planning and Clinical Outcomes - Part II

by Cocconi Renato and De Franco David John and Federici Canova Fabio and Perakis Nikolaos and Gracis Stefano and Veneziani Marco

The integration of orthodontics and restorative dentistry represents one of the most sophisticated and rapidly evolving concepts in modern interdisciplinary dental care. Today, orthodontics extends far beyond tooth alignment, serving as a powerful tool to establish the optimal biological, functional, and esthetic conditions for minimally invasive restorative treatment. Through strategic management of space, tooth position, and soft tissue architecture, orthodontic therapy can significantly enhance restorative outcomes. Simultaneously, advances in adhesive materials and restorative techniques have enabled clinicians to achieve highly conservative, biomimetic, and predictable treatment results. Designed as a comprehensive thematic course, this presentation will explore three key clinical domains. The first will focus on the transition from adolescence to adulthood, where the principles of reversibility and minimal intervention are paramount. In this context, every therapeutic decision should preserve future treatment opportunities while supporting long-term oral health and maintenance. The second section will address the adhesive revolution in contemporary dentistry. Topics will range from material selection and orthodontic space management to modern additive restorative approaches, emphasizing interdisciplinary protocols that maximize the preservation of natural tooth structure while enhancing esthetic and functional outcomes. The third area will examine restorative treatment in the adult patient, illustrating how orthodontic, restorative, and implant therapies must be carefully coordinated to achieve esthetically pleasing, functionally effective, and biologically stable long-term results. The ultimate aim of this lecture is to demonstrate how the integration of orthodontics and restorative dentistry has become a cornerstone of contemporary dental practice, enabling a more conservative, biologically driven, and patient-centered approach to treatment.
