Abstract

Designing the Smile: Synergies Between Periodontal Tissues, Orthodontic Movement, and Esthetics

by Grecolini Maria Elena

Smile design represents one of the major challenges in modern dentistry, requiring an interdisciplinary approach that integrates orthodontics, periodontology, and esthetics in a synergistic manner. The interaction between orthodontic movement and periodontal tissues plays a key role in achieving outcomes that are not only functional and stable over time, but also aesthetically harmonious. This presentation explores the relationship between orthodontics and the periodontium, emphasizing how the conscious management of both soft and hard tissues is essential for preserving periodontal health and appropriately guiding the final esthetic outcome. Only through an integrated and biologically driven approach is it possible to design smiles that are simultaneously healthy, functional, and aesthetically excellent. Based on the most recent scientific evidence, an integrated treatment-planning model aimed at optimizing clinical outcomes will be proposed. Clinical cases will also be presented to illustrate the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary approach in the management of complex situations
